For over two decades, APOPO has led humanitarian mine action, clearing more than 120 million square meters of land and restoring safety to communities across Africa and Asia. Beyond landmines, its renowned scent-detection rats also contribute to tuberculosis control, detecting cases that conventional tests often miss and improving diagnosis by up to 48% in vulnerable areas. Through its Innovation Department, APOPO is now expanding this expertise into search and rescue (SAR). In disaster zones and post-earthquake debris sites, RescueRATs - outfitted with miniature, tech-enabled backpacks - navigate debris to locate survivors, transmitting live video, audio, and positional data. Their agility, precision, and low cost make them powerful allies to traditional SAR tools such as dog teams and drones, helping rescuers save lives faster and more effectively.
